The "how many" question is a little
tricky since it depends mostly on how often you want to do
laundry. I have two children and wash a load of diapers every day. I
had 15 small diapers and that worked out well if it wasn't a
particularly "busy" day for my daughter's diapering needs. As babies
get older they need to be changed less frequently so we now have 12
medium and 10 large diapers. That seems to be plenty.
Occasionally I get lazy and skip a day --we're all human. It's a
good idea to have a few disposables on hand (use 7th Generation or
some other chlorine free diaper!) for those days when doing a load
of laundry is more effort than you're willing to make. If you always
want to use cloth but want to do laundry less frequently, buy more
diapers! I still wouldn't recommend going more than two days
between using and washing a diaper unless you really don't mind a
stinky room.
Another option if you need a little extra absorbency is to use a diaper doubler. It's made from 2 layers of micro-terry and is a little thinner than an insert but not quite as absorbent. They're handy if you want some extra absorbency but don't want a bulky diaper.
You could also use hemp inserts which are
super absorbent. They're the only thing that consistently work
overnight for my older daughter. She usually sleeps for 12 hours and
that's a long time for any diaper to be leak-free! The only drawback
with hemp is the inserts can't be washed with your Fuzzi Bunz
because there are natural oils in the hemp that coat the Fuzzi Bunz
fleece and prevent them from wicking the moisture away from your
baby.
